First of all we want to offer a huge apology for the lack of communication and updates. This is a pretty massive undertaking but it is no excuse for not keeping you the customers informed.
Over the past couple months you have seen our original estimates for the pre-order period extended into this summer. This has been due to a number of factors including parts and supply chain issues, tariffs and the incredibly limited resources we have being a small team.
To be specific about how our process works, we (Chris and Trevor) make the FlippyDrives, then we program and test each one, then we put all of the pieces in each box. Once everything is done we send those en-mass to Crowd Supply to warehouse. After that they are responsible for sending them to each person. We don’t have any insight into the queue for fulfillment of the preorder. We are the manufacturer and CS is the retailer, so we don’t get to see those details.
We definitely had some slowdowns with trying to finish the previous batch (as we refer to it "batch 2"). Many of those included production process and the wild trade war that took place. Because of the extreme uncertainty of the cost of our imports, we needed to pause the help we had lined up for programming and packaging until everything was in-hand and no longer under threat of arbitrarily high tariffs. That meant slower production.
We are working on completing the pre-orders as fast as possible. There were a few documented instances where items were shipped in the wrong order. As far as we can tell this has only affected a few people, and we have been working with our partners at Mouser and Crowd Supply who report those issues are now resolved.
We are out of that situation now and we have produced over 10,000 FlippyDrive to ship. We have hired extra hands and we are currently in the process of boxing those and finishing out the pre-orders. After which we will have a large excess and we will be able to go from pre-orders to in-stock!
We want everybody to understand that we hear you and we feel you’re frustration as well. We all want to get this awesome product and it can be really painful waiting for so long. Thank you all for your support and patience. It is such a wonderful thing that we get to make something that makes people so happy.
Unfortunately due to a production error some of the first deliveries in Batch 3 may include the wrong Flex cable. Some units were prepared with the Panasonic Q flex which is clearly marked with the words "Q Flex" in white text. Unfortunately these are incompatible with the normal FlippyDrive install for DOL-001 and DOL-101 units. If you receive a unit with this error please reach out to our support directly. We will promptly send you a replacement Flex free of charge.
